Plastics Processing

The smaller the more challenging

The demands on the injection side in the manufacture of miniature and micro components have been clearly defined for some time. The problem was simply this: how could these requirements be achieved and implemented technically? The Arburg micro-injection module offers an efficient solution. It combines an 8 mm injection screw with a second screw for melting the material.

Forums Highlight News in Energy, Healthcare, and Green Technologies

The Fundamentals & Fellows Forum and three New Technology Forums, held at the SPE’s ANTEC 2012 Conference April 2-4 in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., present emerging research, some close to commercial, some still in the concept stage. This year’s four forums (www.4spe.org/antecnpe-2012-new-technology-forums) cover fundamental research, energy and renewable energy, healthcare, and green technologies. Unlike other ANTEC papers, however, these aren’t reprinted later. You have to be there. That’s easier this year because ANTEC is co-located with the National Plastics Exposition April 1-5. Here’s a preview of some of what you’ll hear.

Presenters at the Fundamentals & Fellows Forum, Monday a.m. April 2, are fellows of the Society of Plastics Engineers, a small group of individuals chosen for major contributions to the fundamental knowledge of plastics, or other renowned experts in their fields. Costas Gogos, distinguished research professor of chemical engineering and Huiju Liu, post doctoral fellow at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (www.njit.edu) and the Polymer Processing Institute, Newark, N.J. (www.polymers-ppi.com), present a new pharmaceutical extrusion technology in which poorly water-soluble drugs are melt compounded into a water soluble polymeric formulation, absorbable by the human body.
